Manning's Restaurant is located on the corner of Como and 22nd Av SE,
1 mile west of Hwy 280 on Como, between the UofM Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses.
Ralph Manning bought the grocery store at 22nd and Como and moved his family of eight to Minneapolis in 1927 after their fishing resort in Quebec was destroyed by fire. He housed his family in the apartment upstairs, and they delivered groceries by horse cart.There was a barn for the horse and ice storage and the store even had a fountain. On June 2, 1932 Manning's Cafe opened, after Ralph turned the grocery store into a tavern serving beer and hamburgers.
Around 1949 Ralph’s son, Ed, left Schafer’s Grocery in Dinkytown and took over for his father. In 1958 Manning’s added a full kitchen to the building, allowing the menu to be expanded to include fried chicken and steak. Before then kitchen had been just a grill and refrigerator behind the bar. In 1977, the kitchen was expanded again, quadrupling the size of the old one! Ed's son, Larry now runs Manning's.
For years Manning’s has been famous for great popcorn. Ed charged a penny a bowl, saying he would charge that penny until the machine was paid for... that was 4 popcorn machines ago! Manning’s pops about five tons of popcorn per year. It is rumored that many college students have lived on free popcorn and beer at Manning’s over the years.
In the early years Manning’s served only 3.2 beer. Strong beer and wine was added in 1987 and in 2005 a full liquor bar was added to compliment their famous draft beer...
And yes, the beer lines are still cleaned every night!

Lord of the Rings
We often hear the metaphor about "peeling an onion" to describe the surprising layers of depth of something that can seem to be one way on the surface but inside is something more than first appeared. When I hear that metaphor, I can't be the only one whose next thought is, "Man, I could go form some onion rings."
An onion can be fried in so many different ways. There's the bloom, the little teeny crispies, the fat breadcrumbs, or the puffy and beer-battered. But one kind of fried onion you can only experience at Manning's Cafe, near the UofM.
Manning's has been in the same spot since 1932, when Ralph Manning turned the grocery store on the corner of 22nd and Como into a restaurant serving hamburgers and beer. Manning had come to the area in 1927 after his resort was allegedly burned down by the employees because of a pay dispute. He moved his large family into a one-bedroom apartment above a grocery store. The story goes that Manning began bootlegging and used those illicit funds to but the store.
In 1949 the restaurant added a full kitchen. Manning's has remained in the family, eventually passing to Ralph's grandson Larry, who now runs the restaurant with his sons.
It's an icon of the neighborhood, a gathering spot for those who live nearby as well as students and Packer fans. The room feels almost untouched by time. The beer lines are cleaned every night, and the beer is still sold in a proper schooner (or half schooner.)
Though Manning's now has a full liquor license, it is the beer that pairs best with the onion rings. Fat slices of onion are battered by hand in a mixture like a Pronto Pup batter. The batter holds just a tiny bit of sweetness, which makes the ring seem like an unholy but thoroughly delicious matrimony of doughnut and fried onion. The result is an onion ring for the ages -- a full meal of fried goodness coming in at $8.50 for a full order of $6.50 for a half. U of M students may come for the free popcorn, but the minute they have a little change in their pockets, it's time to upgrade to these unique onion rings. The flavor haunts the food memory for years to come, inspiring pilgrimages back to the old neighborhood for a taste of sweet nostalgia at a family-owned restaurant that has stood the test of time.
